Kionia Apts, Kerames, Crete

Tucked away in a relatively sheltered sand and pebble bay on the remote and undeveloped south coast of Crete, this little group of four blue and white apartments and 2 studios are destined to become a favourite amongst those who want to escape the world for a brief moment in time.
As the road meanders in snake like fashion ever downwards from tiny Kerames and just before it meets the sea at the picturesque little harbour taverna at Ag Fotini a left hand turning and 300 meters of track bring you to the Kionia Apts,  sitting in glorious solitude beside the beach.

Built in the likeness of the little cubic houses of the islands spread across the Cyclades, they have a simplicity in style belied by their interior fittings. When we visited them, we certainly didn't expect them to have such luxuries as dishwashers, TV and DVD players, computers, air conditioning, mosquito screens and washing machines (shared). 

For walkers and those who like to get away from it all, the position of these apartments is matchless. A string of sandy beaches and sand dunes runs eastward to Ligres, just under 2kms away, with its 2 tavernas, Triopetra and then onward to distant Agios Pavlos.
 
5 kms to the west further small sandy bays and rocky coastline give way to the lagoon backed Swallows Canyon Beach below the impressive Moni Preveli Monastry, solitary on its hill top.
Hanging precariously above the coast line is the pretty white village of Kerames, certainly worth exploring but for shopping you will need to drive to Spili approx 35 mins drive away. If you do intend to self cater you will need to stock up as you pass through. We found the bread, fresh from the wood fired oven freezes well!
Beachcombers and would be castaways will enjoy living out their fantasies at the Kionia Apartments albeit in a rather comfortable manner.

Kionia 3, 1 Bedroom Apt

This top floor apartment has a spacious open plan living room, furnished with  a comfortable sofa/bed, a   light beech dining table and bistro style chairs. The kitchen area is well  equipped with a full cooker, large fridge freezer, microwave oven as well as the aforesaid mini dishwasher.Through sliding glass doors, the  generous balcony is shaded by a bamboo roof and  furnished with a cane sofa and chairs, a glass table and  sunbeds. The design of the building provides maximum privacy on the balcony.

The turquoise tiled bathrooms have baths with shower fittings and hairdryers and the neatly furnished double bedrooms have cupboard space a plenty. The positioning  of the building means there is no view from the window, which serves to  permit a cooling through draught of sea air; however this lack of view is, in our opinion, compensated for many times over from everywhere else in the apartment.

Please note: There are approx 50 steps up to this apartment from the parking area.

Kerames, Crete
Turning off the road after passing through the pretty spa village of Spili, you are entering a different world. As you wind towards the coast, first climbing upward towards the tiny village of Akounda, with its wonderful old wash house hidden away amongst its tiny streets, followed by equally tiny, Ardaktos then turning and winding before you cross over the ridge and catch site of the Libyan sea stretching below. Then begins the downward stretch of the journey, passing through more tiny villages where life continues in much the same way as it has for centuries, then at last, Kerames balancing on the hillside. ...More about Kerames >>
