Velanos Cottages, Kefali, Crete
600 metres from the village, these four cottages have been built by Georgos the owner in an appealing traditional style with tiled roofs, natural stone walls, timbered ceilings and great big fire places! Nestling on the hillside, with magnificent views down the valley to the sea, they blend in perfectly with the village below, which is a tribute to Georgo's very considerable effort and creative vision.
From a small parking area above the cottages, Georgos has literally carved a 50 metre footpath to cottage 4, from where 20 natural stone steps lead down the hillside to cottage 3, before continuing down a further 30 stone steps and flower bordered pathways to cottage 1 and 2.
The superb 12 metre swimming pool with adjoining children's pool is located to one side of the property on the terraced hillside a short distance from cottage 3. Protected to the rear by a natural stone wall and with a large sun terrace in the same local stone, it enjoys wonderful views down the valley towards the sea.
Cottage 1 Sleep 2/3
Adjoining Cottage 2, Cottage1 has its own private pathway to a sunny rear terrace bordered by a stone wall and topped with geraniums in typical village style. The terrace has rustic patio furniture in keeping with the character of the cottage and truly breathtaking panoramic views down the valley to the sea. A secluded terrace around the corner is partly shaded by the huge and amazingly spry Velanos Tree, said to be 2000 years old and from which the cottages take their name. An entrance door leads into the small open plan living room with a massive open fire place, plus a dining area tucked away to one side with cosy bench seating. Beyond this the remarkable saloon style kitchenette is equipped with authentic village cupboards and shelving and other traditional nooks and crannies, as well as a fridge freezer and a small electric oven with 2 ring hob.
To the side of the kitchen entrance is a small tiled shower room, whilst off the living room is a door to an immensely appealing bedroom, with double bed, polished pine floors and sloping beamed ceiling. Georgos has constructed the rustic wooden wardrobe, whilst the pretty wall decorations and doilies on the dresser and bedside tables are all hand embroidered by Georgo's wife Jenny. There is also a wonderful view from the bedroom window, which Homer would no doubt describe as the handiwork of the gods.
For extra privacy a high stone wall, with an extraordinarily rustic gate, to facilitate visiting the neighbours separates the terrace at the front of Cottages 1 and 2.
Notes: The bench seat next to the fireplace is wide enough for a child to sleep on.
NB. There are a total of 50 natural stone steps down the hill to these two cottages.
