One of our discoveries many years ago now, this unsophisticated little Cretan
village, 25 km east of Sitia, has been relatively unaffected by the inroads
of tourism despite its superb nearby beaches. Nevertheless, with the advent
of the Marina Village Hotel, changes slowly took place and today the village
boasts a number of small pensions, almost a dozen tavernas, a couple of lively
bars and even a hopeful disco.
Happily,
despite these changes, the village's placid, rural lifestyle has altered
very little and you can still sit outside a cafe on the square, with a tiny
cup of thick Greek coffee and watch the world go by on the back of a donkey whilst
the village taxi hibernates in the shade of a huge plane tree. You might
also notice that the clock on the church across the square, seems to have
stopped permanently at a quarter past two and this seems somehow appropriate
in a society where time is measured by the sun, and minutes are really
of very little consequence...
Accommodation Guestbook
Palekastron We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Marina Village. Antonis, the owner made us very welcome, and the whole holiday had a marvellously laid back feel. Breakfast round the pool was a social occasion, and many clients in the hotel were on repeat visits. One German couple on their 21st visit! Hopefully we will return! David Yates, Jul 2003
