Just 13 Km inland from Chania, but a million miles away in time, this small village in the foothills of the White Mountains remains almost entirely unaffected by tourism and life still revolves around the tending of crops and livestock as it has done for hundreds of years and is connected by numerous tiny roads to many other small villages similarly lost in time and on our map we counted at least a dozen all with in 10km! Gerolakos has a petrol station and a small cafeneon run by Angeliki who in the summer puts out a maximum of three tables in her courtyard and with a bit of advance notice she will be delighted to cook you a selection of simple Cretan meals. We are working on a menu for her in Greek and English to make it easier. For a choice of three bona fide tavernas the small village of Kato Horio at the head of the Dyktynna Gorge is just a 3km drive, whilst a 6km drive will bring you to the village of Malaxa where there are two tavernas boasting a little more sophistication and amazing aerial views over Chania town and Souda Bay. For basic necessities, the village of Kontopoula (5km) has a small mini-market, but for stocking up the larder there’s a really good supermarket on the outskirts of Souda that you will pass by on your way from Chania airport. It’s also worth noting that every week day a bread van delivers fresh bread to the village around 7pm. Sorry no milkman though! Accommodation Guestbook |
