20km east of Chania with truly spectacular views of Crete’s White Mountains, this idyllic little village perched atop a hill overlooking Souda Bay is surrounded by olive groves and terraced farmland criss-crossed by drystone walls and ancient Byzantine donkey paths. There’s a well stocked mini-market and a rustic little kafenion in the tiny village square and from here narrow little streets with whitewashed walls garlanded by flowers wend their way to the church. On the edge of the village you will also find a delightful little taverna serving authentic and very tasty Cretan fare. From here, a track wends its way down the hillside to the nearest beach, which is just under 3 km and a wonderful walk. For the less energetic the track is also navigable by car if you take it nice and slowly over the rough spots. For a good selection of tavernas and shops of all descriptions, Kalives 5km away is the best choice although Almirida 4km distance, also has some excellent tavernas and lovely sandy beaches.
Less than 5km inland, the attractive villages of Gavalohori and Vamos offer a further choice of tavernas and some interesting local craft and produce shops. We consider car hire is essential when staying in Douliana.
